Pierre Gassendi’s mid-seventeenth-century Syntagma philosophiae Epicuri, digitised on Gallica, reintroduced atomism inside a theist frame. The dated book is Gassendi’s. Epicurus did not baptise the atoms.
Context
Without Gassendi, Latin atomism stays a heresy caption. With him, early-modern natural philosophy can cite a cleaned Garden. Cleaning is distortion and also transmission.
Epicurus is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.
Why it matters
A printed Christian atomism is a scholarly access bridge into early-modern physics talk.
