In 1887 Teubner at Leipzig issued Usener’s Epicurea, still the fullest fragment collection. Epicurus did not edit it. Scan copies now circulate via research archives.

Context

Fragments had been scattered in hostile quotations. A numbered corpus made citation possible and also risked treating scraps as a system. Philology is the gain; over-system is a later error.

Epicurus is not the sole author of every later object, law, or museum label that uses the name. Shared work with courts, excavators, printers, spouses, officials, and later states does not erase a documented role, and it does not make an ancient person the signer of a twentieth-century statute.

Why it matters

A Teubner fragment book is a scholarly access path, not a recovered autograph library.
