The first fact about Hegel a welfare reading should not skip is an office, not a dialectic cartoon. In 1818 Altenstein seated him in Fichte’s Berlin chair inside restoration Prussia (https://www.hu-berlin.de/en (opens in a new tab); https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hegel-social-political/ (opens in a new tab)). On 22 October he began lectures that did create a shared student public; the appointment itself remains throne-adjacent staffing. The 1820/21 Philosophy of Right then taught that the rational is actual (https://archive.org/details/philosophyright00siba (opens in a new tab)). Its preface named Jakob Fries after the demagogue hunt.
Jena Privatdozentur from 1801 was unpaid skilled hours (https://www.uni-jena.de/en (opens in a new tab)). A German-constitution manuscript stayed unpublished (https://data.bnf.fr/en/11907200/georg_wilhelm_friedrich_hegel/ (opens in a new tab)). On 5 February 1807 Ludwig Fischer was born as Hegel left for Bamberg. The Bamberger Zeitung paid him inside Napoleonic-Bavarian press limits (https://www.stadt.bamberg.de/ (opens in a new tab)). October 1806 displaced him from Jena under arms. Schelling read the Phenomenology preface as a break (https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/17064 (opens in a new tab); https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hegel/ (opens in a new tab)). By 1820 the Berlin school occupied goods; in 1827 the Jahrbücher made a camp; in 1829–30 he served as rector. Marx is not in this list of lifetime affiliations.
The offsets are documents. Tübingen 1788 with Hölderlin and Schelling is a Stift course (https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/ (opens in a new tab)). Bern and Frankfurt are tutorial livelihoods and study. 1801 Differenzschrift is a public map of a dispute. 1805 is an extraordinary title. 1807 Phenomenology is a copyable syllabus. Niethammer’s 1808 placement and the Nuremberg rectorship are school instruments (https://www.nuernberg.de/ (opens in a new tab)). Logic 1812–16 and Encyclopaedia 1817 are knowledge-records (https://archive.org/details/scienceoflogic01hege (opens in a new tab); https://www.uni-heidelberg.de/en (opens in a new tab)). Berlin aesthetics and history and religion cycles are oral publics (https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hegel-aesthetics/ (opens in a new tab)). Gans is a minority-access ally in the same official school.
What the score must not say: that Hegel is liberal because he lectured on freedom; that Phenomenology is already Marx; that 1831 cholera is his policy; that Hotho’s 1835 Aesthetics is the 1823 mouth; that a later party is the Jahrbücher. Complex contribution is honest. Confidence is high on chairs, imprints, and the 1821 book; medium on private motives in 1807 paternity, on any one blocked promotion, and on Hotho’s wording.
Related people are Schelling, Hölderlin, Gans, Niethammer, Altenstein, Fichte, Kant, Schleiermacher, Heine, and Feuerbach as a 1820s hearer — not Marx.
1818 appointment is not 1818 lectures. 1820 preface is not the whole Right as a second twin if the denunciation is stored as the kick. 1807 book is not 1807 newspaper. If a 1821 paragraph were a franchise statute, the demo row would change. It is not. Britannica’s life dates remain a check (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Georg-Wilhelm-Friedrich-Hegel (opens in a new tab)). Cambridge’s companion locates the school as a Berlin public with enemies (https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/cambridge-companion-to-hegel/ (opens in a new tab)). Dialectics as a later classroom word is not the 1812 Logic shop (https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/hegel-dialectics/ (opens in a new tab)). Responsibility language stays boring: Goebhardt printed, Altenstein appointed, Gans edited, Niethammer placed, a Bavarian paper paid. If a 1821 paragraph were a franchise statute, the demo row would already have said so. It is a textbook. If a 1807 colophon were a newspaper salary, the fiscal row would have merged them. It did not.
The 1818 Berlin appointment placed Hegel at the center of Prussian academic life
Hegel's move from Heidelberg to Berlin in 1818 was a concrete institutional promotion, not merely a change of address. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (opens in a new tab) records that he had returned to university teaching with a Heidelberg chair in 1816 and then accepted the chair of philosophy at the University of Berlin in 1818, described there as the most prestigious philosophical post in the German world. A surviving letter from Prussian minister Karl vom Stein zum Altenstein, dated 8 May 1818, shows the administrative relationship behind the move: Altenstein wrote to Hegel (opens in a new tab) about Hegel's coming to Berlin and his new sphere of work. Hegel delivered his Berlin inaugural lecture on 22 October 1818, according to the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy's biographical record of Altenstein (opens in a new tab). The appointment mattered because it gave Hegel a major public teaching platform after the disruptions that followed the Napoleonic occupation of Jena and after his years in Bamberg and Nuremberg. From Berlin he published the Philosophy of Right in 1821 and remained in the chair until his death in 1831.
Lectures, students and posthumous editions expanded the reach of the system
Hegel's later influence depended heavily on lecture cycles and on the students who recorded, taught and edited them. The Stanford Encyclopedia's history of Hegel's aesthetics (opens in a new tab) identifies an aesthetics course at Heidelberg in 1818 and Berlin courses in 1820/21, 1823, 1826 and 1828/29. Those lectures were not identical to a single book written and finalized by Hegel; student transcripts became central evidence for the later published tradition. After his death, Heinrich Gustav Hotho issued an edition of the aesthetics lectures in 1835 and again in 1842. Eduard Gans, another Hegel pupil, also became a vehicle for the Berlin legal-philosophy tradition. Mohr Siebeck's description (opens in a new tab) of Gans's natural-law lectures says they were delivered from 1827/28 to 1838/39, initially on Hegel's behalf and later as a continuation of the established teaching tradition. This transmission history is consequential: several works now treated as pillars of Hegel's philosophy of art, religion and history were assembled after 1831 from manuscripts and lecture notes, so claims about “Hegel's text” often depend on which lecture record or editorial reconstruction is being used.
